Book Review -THE 3 MISTAKES OF MY LIFE -BY CHETAN BHAGAT

The famous movie made on this book was “Kai Po Che”. Chetan Bhagat is famous for his style of writing and is loved by young readers for the wittiness of his content. This book is no exception. He has wonderfully narrated a story of a young guy who tries to commit suicide, and just before he does so, he sends a mail to Bhagat for no apparent reason. Bhagat finds him out like one finds a needle out of a hay stock and talks to him about what had made him take that extreme step. The book is about three friends, Ishaan, Govind and Omi. Govind is the one who’s narrated the whole story and Omi was dead by the time this happened.
These three friends, in their 20’s are very close. Govind dreams of owing a business and opens a cricket shop to make sure that his friends’ interests are taken care of. They were doing good, saved money to open a shop in an upmarket mall. They pay the deposit and rent, spent every saved penny and took loans. Their dreams shattered to pieces when on 26th Jan 2000 Earthquake stuck Ahmedabad and their dream shop came down to ashes even befo0re it was built. This was the first mistake of Govind’s life.
Later, they gather courage and unite once again to work harder to make their dreams come true again. Ishaan started taking up cricket coaching (he being one of the finest batsman of his school time) and his favorite was Ali, a Muslim student who was blesses by the gift of hitting 6’s. In the meanwhile Govind falls in love with Ishaan’s sister whom he was tutoring and who was barely even 18 years of age.  He gets involved with her physically. This was the second mistake of Govind’s life.
A year later Ahmedabad was again ruined by the communal riots after a train coach consisting of karsevaks was set afire. This coach carried Omi’s uncle’s 14 year old son who died. It was concluded that the Muslim community had done this at the Godhra station. Omi’s uncle was a politician and under the influence of alcohol and marijuana wanted to kill Ali. The three friends unite to fight him and other 50 members of his violent mob. Omi loses his life saving Ali, yet, His uncle was adamant on killing Ali, Ishaan had been cornered and the only hope was Govind, who became selfish for a fraction of second, but managed to save Ali’s life. Though, the Trishul which attacked Ali had ruined his wrist and this was the third mistake of Govind’s life.
Ishaan comes to know of Govind’s affair with his sister and he breaks all ties with him. 5 years down the line they have saved enough money to get Ali operated (as his parents died during riots and Ishaan was bringing him up) but Ishaan refuses to touch Govind’s money. This is when Govind decided to end his life. But Bhagat reaches there and he is saved. He re-unites the tie of friendship between Govind & Ishaan. Ali gets successfully operated and after all this the book was released.
